California Prop 65

What is Prop 65? (From CA.Gov)

Proposition 65, officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, was enacted as a ballot initiative in November 1986. The proposition protects the state's drinking water sources from being contaminated with chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm, and requires businesses to inform Californians about exposures to such chemicals.

Prop 65 In Plain Language

Proposition 65 is a California State law that applies to companies selling products in California.  Proposition 65 requires warnings on products that contain any of the listed chemicals found on the "Proposition 65 Chemicals List" above the "low-level" mandate. Proposition 65 is not a product safety law, but rather a “right-to-know” law.

There are over 800 chemicals on the Proposition 65 list, which is administered by California's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), a part of the California Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The list includes naturally occurring and man-made chemicals.  Proposition 65 warnings can be seen on a wide variety of consumer products including: food items, health & beauty products, electronic devices, clothing, and even inside of restaurants, businesses, and other retail stores.

What is the purpose of the warning on Wagan packaging, Wagan Products, and on Wagan.com?

The warning is part of Wagan's ongoing effort to comply with the California Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (known as "Proposition 65" or "Prop 65").

The warning appears like this:

WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals including DEHP, which is known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information, go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.
